Creating the Jewelry
The
jewelry is handcrafted and displayed by jewelry artist, Samuel Luse. Many of his creations are original made from stones and minerals. Most frequently he uses Lapis Lazuli,
Malachite, Opal, Obsidian, Variscite, Onyx, Jasper, Agate, Chrysocolla and
Azurite. However, other stones are available.
The settings he incorporates are made with Argentium sterling silver or 14KT gold-filled metals.
The green Variscite rough stone shown is an example of transforming nature's material into a beautiful work of art.
The whole process begins by selecting a specific "rock" or rough stone to work with. After examining the many aspects and qualities the stone already encompasses, he then determines the best shape and orientation. The rough stone is cut into a slab, shaped, and the surface domed. The gem is then ground and polished to a high sheen and the gem comes into existence.
Setting the gem not only displays the gem's artwork, but also protects it. The materials used for the settings are sterling silver or 14KT gold-filled. Some settings require silversmithing or goldsmithing while others require wire wrapping or wire weaving. Wire of various sizes and shapes are chosen for wrapping to create the artist's unique pendant jewelry. Bracelets and earrings are made using the same procedures. Sterling silver and gold-filled beads or gems may also be incorporated into the designs.
